Austin Wayne Self & Mason Mitchell Motorsports Survive Late Race Carnage at Toledo for Sixth Place Finish

(Mooresville, N.C., May 18, 2015--) Toledo Speedway always proves that anything can and will happen in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, and Sunday was no exception. Austin Wayne Self (AWS) driver of the No. 98 AM Technical Solutions Ford for Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) positioned himself at the front of the field when disaster struck with 23 laps to go. Leader Grant Enfinger lost power setting off a chain reaction behind him. Self and the No. 98 sustained right front damage in the accident. The MMM crew went to work and fixed the right front while managing to stay on the lead lap. Self managed to finish in the sixth position and collect his fourth top-ten of the 2015 season.

“We struggled a little bit at the start of the race with a loose car so we decided to take a chance and put four tires on at the halfway mark and it paid off,” Self stated. “We got a great restart on Grant with about 25 to go and on the backstretch his car just quit and we had no place to go.”

“This Mason Mitchell Motorsports team did a great job assessing the damage after the accident, they kept us on the lead lap and we were able to come away with a sixth place finish. I can’t wait to get to New Jersey next weekend.”

Saturday in Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell Self turned a lap of 16.548 seconds at 108.774 MPH to place him 12th on the grid.

When the green flag waved on the sixth race of 2015 season, rain soon followed. The red flag was displayed for rain on lap 24. After a 47 minute rain delay the race resumed. Self moved up from his 12th starting spot into the 8th position at lap 33.

Approaching the halfway point Veteran crew chief Matt Weber elected to bring the No. 98 down pit-road on lap 98 under caution. He elected for four-tires and a handling adjustment.

During the course of the next 50 laps, Self exerted patience and moved into the top-five for the first time with 54 laps to go in the event.

Self inherited the lead with 38 laps remaining when the leaders ahead of him made their final pit-stop. Self lead the next six circuits.  A restart with 24 laps to go changed the complexion of the race when leader Enfinger lost power out of turn two setting up an incident that included Self and other front runners. The accident brought out the red flag for the second time.

When the red flag was lifted the MMM crew went to work and kept the No. 98 car on the lead lap. Self was able to pick up one spot in the closing laps and crossed the stripe in the sixth position equaling his best Toledo finish.

With the sixth place finish Self and MMM stay 4th in points but gain 55 valuable points on point leader Grant Enfinger. Now the defending championship team is only 60 points out of first heading into the lone road course race on the 2015 schedule at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

The ARCA 150 presented by Unique Pretzels at New Jersey Motorsports Park will take place Sunday May 24th. The race will be broadcasted live on the ARCA Racing Network at beginning at 1:15 p.m. eastern. will also have live timing and scoring for all on-track activity.
